Job Overview:

The Barn Area Supervisor directs and controls activities within the barn operations department which is responsible for the smooth and timely transportation of horses, the permanent and temporary boarding of race horses, and for the documentation and verification of horses stabled on NYRA’s properties. In addition, the Barn Area Supervisor receives and communicates updates on important matters and activities, supervises and evaluates the performance of staff members, and monitors daily activity and productivity in the barn area.

Essential Functions:

Directs and controls the activities of a staff that is responsible for the transportation and boarding of race horses, and for verifying and documenting the credentials of horses stabled on NYRA properties, which involves:

  • Reviewing the schedule of racing for the day;
  • Locating horses scheduled to race and preparing In Today report for Security;
  • In conjunction with the Vanning Supervisor, preparing a van schedule for transporting horses to the track from other locations and ensuring all vans are operational and meet safety standards to transport horses between tracks;
  • Assigning stalls to horses before each meet and notifying trainers and owners related to the location of stalls;
  • Creating and maintaining a tracking system to record horses leaving and entering through stable gates;
  • Maintaining and verifying horse inventory and location on NYRA properties by monitoring and inputting the in/out slips;
  • Collecting appropriate paperwork;
  • Creating diagrams and maintaining books recording permanent stall assignments for each race meet;
  • Working with the Safety Stewards and Equine Investigators to ensure compliance in the barn area. Informing Investigations or Security of any suspicious activity in the barn area;
  • Maintaining familiarity of owners, their horses and trainers. Creating and maintaining contact lists of trainers, veterinarians and NYRA staff to be reached at any time during race meet;
  • Receiving productivity reports daily from staff members. Informing Sr. Director, Racing Secretary of all important matters pertinent to Barn Area operations, including accurate horse counts, stall assignments, horse transfers, ins and outs, and horses not approved for stabling on NYRA properties;
  • Authorizing the purchase of supplies and equipment for barns, stalls, and vans;


Performs a variety of supervisory duties, which include planning and assigning work to ensure adequate coverage of all barn operations; ensuring that all work is done in accordance within established guidelines of the various stakeholders and regulators (including but not limited to NYRA, HISA, NYS Gaming Commission, USDA and DEC); reviewing the performance of staff; recommending disciplinary actions; keeping attendance records; training new staff members; coordinating work with other departments to ensure a smooth flow of work; developing and recommending improvements to existing operating policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with the NYRA dress code; and interviewing candidates for employment.

Ad-hoc projects as needed.



Qualifications:

  • Education (minimum): High School Graduate or GED
  • Experience: 2 – 5 years working with horses in the racing industry preferred
  • Other Requirements: Prior supervisory or management experience. Ability to work with different personalities in a diverse setting. Willingness to work outside. Ability to travel to Saratoga Springs, NY as needed.
  • Principles of supervision, project management and scheduling
  • Time management and multi-tasking
  • Record keeping and data entry
  • Protocol and logistics in the backstretch area
  • Ability to learn the rules of the Vanning CBA
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer skills – proficiency with MS Office suite required

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

This job is located in the barn areas and will require walking, standing and being outside in all types of weather.

Pay Range / Salary: $106,000 - $114,000 per annum
