Job Overview:

Provide administrative support for the veterinary department and its associated responsibilities, including but not limited to departmental paperwork relating to pre-race inspection and furosemide administration, administration of the HIWU (Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit) prescribed blood gas sampling and out of competition sampling, maintenance of both paper and digital data, department scheduling, serving as primary liaison between the veterinarians and the stewards, and fielding inquiries from outside parties (trainers, owners, etc).

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with the stewards to ensure accurate scratch information and changes are identified and reported in a timely manner:
    • Disseminates scratches, changes, and other information to veterinarians in a timely fashion
    • Create, edit, maintain, and distribute the appropriate paperwork to all veterinarians on a daily basis
    • Monitor Lasix administration to ensure accurate timing and records are received from the veterinarians to ensure all eligible horses receive Lasix for each race
    • Assist veterinarians with HIWU administered blood gas testing and out of competition sampling by usings the HIWU testing app and imputing data into the app
    • Packing and shipping of samples to appropriate testing lab as dictated by HIWU
    • In conjunction with the director, oversee the scheduling of all veterinarians to ensure appropriate coverage on race days
    • Work with the director of the veterinary department and the facility department timekeeper to ensure proper payment for all department staff

Qualifications:

  • Education (minimum): Highschool
  • Experience:
    • Basic horse experience, not afraid of horses
    • An interest or experience in thoroughbred racing preferred
  • Other Requirements:
    • Ability to work a racing schedule typically Wednesday to Sunday and some holidays
    • Ability to work at all 3 racetracks, including Saratoga in the summer
    • Ability to become certified as a HIWU collection officer
  • Knowledge Required:
    • Strong administrative skills
    • Proficient in Excel, Word, and Outlook
    • Proficient in online data management, comfortable with using tablet/iPad and associated apps
    • Detail oriented and able to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment
    • Strong interpersonal skills

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Primarily, sedentary in nature as this is an office role.

Pay Range / Salary: $29.87/hourly
