Job Overview:

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (“NYRA”) seeks an intellectually curious, detail-oriented Legal Assistant to assist with various functions within its busy Legal Department. The successful candidate will work with multiple lawyers managing litigation and/or contract negotiation calendars. They will draft contracts, applications, and correspondence and ensure documentation complies with NYRA policies and procedures. With a positive customer service-focused attitude, the successful candidate will manage both up and across the organization, advising their supervisor, business leads, and other stakeholders of competing priorities, procedural missteps, and ideal solutions. The successful candidate will word process oral, written, specific, and/or conceptual comments to edit documents. Work with various software programs to enter data and process department requests. Implement an intuitive document filing and saving system.

Essential Functions:

Assists multiple attorneys in general practice including contracts, regulatory compliance, purchasing and procurement, litigation and labor and employment matters.

Undertakes legal (i.e., WestLaw) and basic research (i.e., Google or similar), in a variety of areas, as requested by attorneys. Provides administrative and organizational support to the legal department by performing routine office tasks such as photocopying, scanning, filing, etc.

Supports the Legal Department and other parties to support and facilitate business transactions, such as licensing agreements, arbitrations, liability management, simulcasting, sponsorship and other subjects while minimizing business risk, which involves:

  • Coordinating with multiple departments across the organization to draft correspondence and applications
  • Word processing edits to documents from both specific and conceptual comments
  • Drafting/issuing notices regarding terminations and option extensions
  • Participating on calls and negotiations by taking notes and providing feedback to assist attorneys with contract drafting, calendar management and follow up
  • Maintaining document files
  • Tracking legal documents from assignment to completion and appropriately expediting completion
  • Handling sensitive and confidential material
  • Managing relationships with vendors, business partners, and regulators at the direction of lawyers
  • Maintaining communication on the performance of the contract with all stakeholders in accordance with organizational protocols and standards
  • Maintaining and summarizing contract information for use by attorneys and business leads in the performance of the contract
  • Maintaining a schedule of contract expirations and advising lawyers appropriately

Qualifications:

  • Education (minimum): Bachelor’s degree. Legal experience and/or paralegal certificate a plus.
  • Experience: 3 years of relevant experience
  • Other Requirements: Excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong research skills. High level of intellectual curiosity – must enjoy “figuring it out.” Creative, results-oriented thinker. Emotionally intelligent. Extremely professional demeanor and work ethic.
  • Additional Knowledge Required: Ability to prioritize and multi-task.  Superior organizational skills.  Experience with Contracts, Intellectual Property, Corporate Law and/or Labor Law a plus. Horse racing operations a plus. Spanish or additional language skills a plus

Pay Range / Salary: $32.00 - $32.00 ph based on a 35 hour work-week/ $58,250 - $61,880 per annum
