Job Overview:

Preform all functions of a regulatory veterinarian. These responsibilities include but are not limited to, observing horses during morning training, completing pre-race examinations, observing horse on track during racing, attending to any on track emergencies, performing pre-race lasix administration, and collecting both pre race blood gas and out of competition blood samples.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform pre-race soundness evaluations to determine fitness to race on all horses entered and recommend the scratch of any horse found to not be racing fit/sound
  • Observe horses during morning training to assess soundness and follow up with any horses unfit to train.
  • Observe horses in the paddock and on track during the races to ensure soundness and attend to any injuries that occur.
  • In the event of injury, immediately make an assessment and stabilize the horse, ensure appropriate transportation off track, and attend to the injured horse until the private veterinarian can take over.
  • Perform race day lasix administration and ensure all horses on lasix only those receive lasix.
  • Help to review and maintain department files documenting regarding exam history, past performances, and relevant medical histories of horses running at NYRA.
  • Perform HISA/HIWU prescribed blood gas and out of competition blood sampling.'
  • Stay informed and up to date regarding safety and welfare issues affecting horses in the industry, veterinary practices, etc.

Qualifications:

• DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.

• At least 1 year of experience in Equine Practice or the equivalent e.g. internship.

• Strong administrative skills; Good interpersonal skills; Highly ethical, honest and professional; Able to be firm on decisions.

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Working in and around horses in outdoor conditions.

Pay Range / Salary: $130,000 - $139,000
